sesgos y errores, produciendo efectos
experimentos cuyos objetivos parciales
fueron:
Analizar el rol de las disparidades
verticales en tareas de juicio de
distancias relativas entre objetos
situados en diferentes planos de
profundidad, en función de la
orientación del estímulo.
Determinar la influencia del fondo
y de la orientación del estímulo en
tareas de juicio de distancias
relativas entre objetos, situados
en un mismo plano frontoparalelo
o en diferentes planos de
profundidad.
Verificar la naturaleza neural de la
anisotropía del espacio visual
desde un enfoque psicofísico no
invasivo mediante el uso de SIRDS.
Los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis
contribuyen a la comprensión sobre la
integración de claves en Visión Binocular y
los sesgos visuales perceptivos en la
percepción de distancias.Recent decades have witnessed multiple
studies investigating the accuracy of our
visual system in depth perception, as well
as the influence of environmental factors
during depth judgment tasks. It is not
uncommon for Virtual Space cues to offer
contradictory or conflicting information,
thus leading to bias and error, which in
turn originate illusory effects resulting
from discrepancies between real and
perceived dimensions.
Our research in the integration of cues in
Binocular Vision aimed at determining the
influence of background characteristics
(curved, flat, etc) on the perception of
visual stimuli presented over it. Therefore,
three different experimental settings were
designed and conducted, with partial
objectives defined as follows:
To evaluate the influence of
vertical disparities in depth
judgment tasks when stimuli were
located at different depth planes
and presented different
orientations.
To determine the influence of
background configuration and
stimulus orientation on depth
judgment tasks, both with stimuli
at the same frontoparallel plane or
at different depth planes.
To evidence the neural origin of
the Visual Space anisotropy from a
non invasive psychophysical
approach with the use of SIRDS.
The findings of the present PhD thesis
contribute to our understanding of the
integration of cues in Binocular Vision, as
well as of the nature of visual bias in
depth perception
Human depth perception can be strongly affected by the characteristics of the environment. Previous studies have assessed visual acuity in the frontoparallel plane but little is known about the effect of background topography on stereoacuity. In the present experiment, based on alignment tasks, we analyzed how stimulus orientation and 3D background configuration influence stereoscopic vision. An experiment was designed to investigate the influence of stimulus orientation (0, 45 and 90 degrees) and background configuration (flat, black, concave and convex) on precision in 3D visual alignment tasks in a virtual environment. Background was found to result in an underestimation of stereoacuity, with the highest and lowest precision scores in comparison judgment tasks corresponding to convex and concave backgrounds, respectively. In addition, a significant orientation by background interaction was discovered. We conclude that background local depth cues are integrated with our target stimuli to contribute to depth perceptionLas características del medio pueden influir notablemente en la percepción de la profundidad en humanos.

Visual acuity at various distances and defocus curve: a good match
The defocus curve (DC) has become the gold standard method for assessing the visual performance at different distances, and hence, to evaluate the depth of focus that is provided by modern presbyopia-compensating intraocular lenses that are used in cataract surgery. A former study, carried out by other authors, reported that the DC method, based on placing the chart at far distance and using trial negative lenses, underestimated the visual acuity that was measured by varying the test distance (VD) in pseudophakic patients. We have revisited the issue with pseudophakic subjects and have extended the study to include young phakic observers with their natural accommodation preserved. Our results show that both the VD and DC methods are equivalent in precision and accuracy and can be used indistinctly. However, the DC method is more practical in the clinics because it does not require further control of the chart positioning and illuminance. This research funded by the Agencia Estatal de Investigación, Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación of the Spanish government (PID2020-114582RB-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Spatio-chromatic vision with multifocal diffractive intraocular lens
Background This study aims to detect alterations in the spatio-chromatic pseudophakic vision produced by multifocal diffractive intraocular lenses (IOLs) and provides a physical interpretation. Methods In vitro characterization of the imaging performance of two diffractive IOLs: AT LISA Tri (Zeiss) and FineVision (PhysIOL) in on-bench model eye illuminated with red (R, 625 nm), green (G, 530 nm) and blue (B, 455 nm) lights. We used the metrics: energy efficiency (EE), area under the modulation transfer function, longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA), and halo intensity. Through-focus (TF) analysis and calculation of the expected defocus curve under white (W) daylight were included. In vivo visual acuity (VA) of 50 pseudophakics (60 eyes) was assessed under W, R, G, B lights at far and near. Two clinical experiments evaluated LCA and R, G, B TF-EE effects on pseudophakic vision and their relative importance. Results Clinical mean VA values under W light agreed with the predicted values at far and near for both IOLs. LCA measurements and R, G, B TF-EE curves were consistent with their lens design based on the 0th and 1st diffraction orders operative for far and near vision, respectively. LCA effects were compensated at near but noticed at far (-¿0.75 D under B light). We detected strong asymmetry in visual resolution depending on the object distance and the illuminating wavelength—red predominance at far, blue predominance at near—in consistency with the TF-EE measurements. Conclusions Diffractive multifocal IOL designs produce asymmetries in the spatio-chromatic vision of pseudophakics beyond the alterations strictly due to LCA. VA asymmetry for far/near object distance under R and B illumination is clinically detectable in subjects implanted with IOLs with 0th and 1st diffraction orders for far and near vision, respectively. Such VA asymmetry cannot be explained solely from the influence of defocus, as would be derived from a chromatic difference of power, but mainly from the wavelength dependence of the EE.Agencia Estatal de Investigación from Spanish Government (Grant No. PID2020-114582RB-I00/AEI/10. 13039/501100011033).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Peer Reviewe
